July's artist for the Monk Lecture Series is Jasper Johns!
In 1954, Jasper Johns burned his entire body of work to begin creating anew. Adopting the language of familiar symbolism to create works that are considered both representational and abstract simultaneously, Johns' first new work came in the form of "Flag", an encaustic work painted from 1954-55 after he dreamed of himself painting the same subject matter. He continued painting this familiar American imagery throughout his career, questioning what it means to be an American, a patriot, an artist, as well as a human in a global society through his use of imagery and his formal technique.
