Arthur Stillwell was a wheeler dealer who could charm the money right out of your pockets. He was so successful, in fact, that he built 2,300 miles of railway, founded over a dozen towns and named several of them after himself.
In 1910 he opened the two-story depot in San Angelo for his new railway, the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Line. It was such a hot property that San Angelo wrestled Sweetwater to be the headquarters for the line. Stillwell dreamed that the railway would cross Mexico, the “treasure chest of the west,” and make investors a fortune by shipping goods from China and Japan through Mexico.
His lovely and loving wife Jenny knew a few things about the dreams her restless husband had. And Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa knew a few more about the way dreams can turn into nightmares.
